28 PETS YOU DIDN’T KNOW WERE HYPOALLERGENIC

To get a pet or not to get a pet, that is the question. Sure they are cute, fluffy and friendly, but for approximately 10 percent of the population, getting one also means living with itchy, watery eyes and sneezing.

According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI), roughly a tenth of the population suffers from cat or dog allergies. But what if you still want to add Fido to your family? Check out this list of hypoallergenic pets that are as cute and adorable as they are less likely to increase the presence of pet-related allergens.

Before getting carried away, however, it should be noted that no pet can be truly 100 percent hypoallergenic. The animals on this list have various qualities that are less likely to trigger the symptoms some allergy sufferers may experience, but since pet allergies can be triggered by saliva and dander as well as fur and other factors, the Mayo Clinic warns that there is no guarantee that these dogs and cats are completely hypoallergenic.

See the sidebar on the right for the list of dog breeds American Kennel Club recognizes as hypoallergenic.

The largest trigger for cat allergies, according to PetMD, is a particular protein (called Fel d 1) found in their saliva. Two breeds, the Siberian and Balinese cats, come highly recommended for cat allergy sufferers since they don't produce that protein, though they will still be a source of pet dander in your home.

See the sidebar on the right for cat breeds that are commonly recognized as causing fewer allergies than most.
